Time Customs
Meal times
In Rhodes, as in the rest of Greece, people normally have their meals later than in other European countries. The first meal of the day, is usually eaten between 8:00 and 10:00 in the morning, and tends to be lighter than in the rest of Europe, being similar to what hotels call a "continental" breakfast.
People sit down for lunch between 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon and for dinner between 9:00 and 10:00 in the evening.
Nevertheless, restaurant hours are adapted to the pace of the working life, and you can find lunch as early as 1:00, while dinner may be served as late as 11:30 at night. It should also be noted that there are restaurants where you can eat at any hour of the day.
Working hours
The workday generally begins at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning lasts till about 8:00 or 9:00 in the evening, with a two- or three-hour break for lunch in the early afternoon.
Shopping hours
Shops in Rhodes open their doors between 9:00 and 10:00 in the morning, and generally close for lunch at 1:30 or 2:00. They open again in the afternoon between 4:00 and 5:00 and remain open until 8:00 or 9:00 in the evening.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that most of the shops in touristic areas like Faliraki and Lindos do not close at midday, and they also remain open Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer.
Entertainment
Theatres and cinemas and shows
On working days and weekends, most cinemas have three showings between 7:00 in the afternoon and 12:00 in the evening.
The National Theatre of Rhodes, located in the Town Hall Square, hosts various theatrical performances and shows throughout the year.
"Sound and Light" is a kind of theatre without actors in which stage action, speech, music and light are united with architecture and displayed in a natural setting. In specific, Sound and Light is a modern kind of performing art, a kind of stereophonic radio theatre combined with light and architecture. The "Sound and Light" of Rhodes goes on since 1961, in the Municipal Garden of Rhodes at Rimini Square - Mandraki .
Clubs and Bars
Most of the bars during the summer open from early morning serving coffee and breakfast and close around 01:00 am. Clubs open at 11:30 pm and close at about 4:30 am.
Social habits in Rhodes
Although more and more locals like to go out during the week, Fridays and Saturdays are still the big nights out on the town. A typical evening out begins with dinner at a restaurant, followed by a glass of wine or a pint of beer in a bar, and from there on to a club or elsewhere.
The city centre bustles with shoppers on Saturday afternoons and evenings, and the enormous number of bars and cafes in the area fill with people looking to for a break and refreshment.
Sundays find most of the locals having lunch in sea restaurants all around the island. In Rhodes, as most of the Greek islands, going out for sea food on Sundays is quite customary.
